Facts: Kookaburras are the largest members of the kingfisher family (which includes over 80 species). They average 40-45 cm in length and they weigh approximately 300-350 grams (about half a pound).

Kookaburras feed on a wide variety of prey including frogs, snakes, lizards, small mammals, and insects. Kookaburras have a characteristic territorial "laughing" call that is often heard in jungle-themed movies. Kookaburas are social birds that live in family groups.

Range: Kookaburras can be seen widely throughout Australia in tropical and subtropical Eucalyptus forests.

Conservation: Kookaburras are threatened primarily due to habitat destruction and because they are easy targets for sport shooting.
