Some Cool Science behind Orthodontics Practices

Think it’s just Teeth? What Orthodontists Do.

Orthodontists are dentists that specialize in the straightening of teeth in patients. People can have crooked teeth that did not grow in correctly due to a smaller jaw line, or teeth can be misaligned due to illness or an accident. Braces, or a teeth straightening device, is employed to cause the process to occur.A top Chicago orthodontics practice shares science of braces

Traditionally, teeth are x-rayed, and a plan is designed to get them straightened wich includes a plaster cast of the position of the current teeth. There may be the necessity of pulling some of the current teeth to make way for the straightening process to happen.

There are a few different types of braces. Metal bands are fastened onto the teeth with a cement, and a wire band is then inserted through guides that are part of the metal bands, until the wire extends from the back of the teeth on one side of the mouth, all the way around the front and to the back of the teeth on the other side.

This is done for the upper teeth and the lower, as usually both need to be straightened. Then the wire is gradually tightened, drawing the teeth in line. This process can go on for one to two years or more until the teeth slowly are lined up like they should be.

The transformation in the face of a person is remarkable in that the jaw line squares up and the person now has a beautiful and lots of confidence.

Orthodontists go to dental school just like all dentists do, but then they pursue additional studies in the orthodontics field. Once they complete their studies in that area, they become full fledged orthodontists and are licensed as such.

Another form if teeth straightening is called Invisilign, and it uses a hard plastic liner that is inserted behind the teeth, and gradually changed in size until the teeth are straightened, in our case, information from a top orthdontist from Chicago. The advantage of the Invisilign program is that nobody can see that the patient is wearing any type of braces, as the device is clear plastic and it is located behind the teeth.

The device can be taken out of the mouth to eat meals, and then placed back when the individual is finished eating. Invisalign can be used for situations where the misalignment is not as serious as some, but it has achieved great popularity because the patient does not have to suffer from the bands and the sharp guides that the traditional treatment requires.
